DEPARTMENT 57: A Groundbreaking Fusion of Design, Light, and Media Art in Saint-Petersburg

In the heart of Saint-Petersburg, a historical building has been transformed into an avant-garde haven for nightlife enthusiasts. DEPARTMENT 57, the latest addition to the city's vibrant club scene, seamlessly combines club and bar areas into a singular yet versatile experience. Designed by the innovative team at DA Bureau, this new space is not just a venue; it's an immersive journey through sound, light, and art.

The primary aim of DEPARTMENT 57 was to redefine the traditional club environment. The design team, led by Anna Lvovskaia, Boris Lvovskiy, Fedor Goreglyad, and Maria Romanova, focused on eliminating redundancies to create a space where music isn’t just heard but felt. By integrating light and media art into the core of their design, they have developed a unique, immersive atmosphere that stands at the forefront of modern club design.

The design philosophy behind DEPARTMENT 57 draws significant inspiration from natural phenomena known for their complex and captivating lighting effects. The space was meticulously crafted to evoke these natural wonders through a minimalistic and modern approach. Historic vaults within the building were preserved and accentuated to form a cohesive mono-material space, providing a striking backdrop for the media installations.

Each area of DEPARTMENT 57 features bespoke media installations that simulate different natural phenomena. In the main dance area, a vibrant and dynamic environment comes to life with a large glowing sphere and 'lightning bolts' that flash in sync with the music. This pulsating light show enhances the sensory experience, creating a mesmerizing connection between sound and light.

In stark contrast to the energetic dance floor, the bar area exudes a serene and sophisticated ambiance. Inspired by the Northern Lights, the bar space offers a calm retreat with sparkling light effects that evoke the ethereal beauty of the aurora. This section includes a hidden gem known as ‘gin,’ a secretive ‘ice cave’ that serves as a cocktail laboratory, providing a unique and exclusive drinking experience.

The project was developed in collaboration with YARKO Lighting Design Studio, whose expertise in creating atmospheric lighting solutions was instrumental in bringing the design concept to life. Their contribution ensured that the lighting elements not only complemented but also enhanced the overall aesthetic and experiential goals of the project.

DEPARTMENT 57 represents more than just a new club—it’s a bold step forward in reimagining what a nightlife venue can be. By merging historical charm with cutting-edge design, light, and media art, it offers a unique journey for every visitor. Whether you’re dancing to pulsating beats or unwinding in a sparkling, aurora-inspired bar, DEPARTMENT 57 promises an unforgettable experience that captivates all the senses.

With its innovative design and immersive atmosphere, DEPARTMENT 57 is set to make a significant mark on the nightlife scene, offering a fresh perspective on how clubs and bars can blend seamlessly with modern art and technology.
